Description: We are offering a billhead for The Algonquin Hotel, Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada dated August 19, 1889, made out to George H. Hull, Jr., Esq. The billhead, which is 5 1/2" x 5 1/2", has an engraving of an Algonquin Indian at the top. The bill was for Mr. Hull and his family from the 15th to the 19th of August, and it included board, and we assume food, in the amount of $36.75; ale totaling $2.50; Stamps for $.09; a Coach for $1.00; Baggage [pick-up we assume] for $1.75; Sandwiches for $.75, and one other charge which appears to say "Pd. Indian" [not sure what that means] for $.25 - for a grand total of $42.59. **NOTE** - The Algonquin Hotel, which still operates today, was built in June of 1889, just two months before the Hull's stayed there. This was the era of the grand hotels that were built in seaside communities for well-to-do businessmen and their families to escape the cares of business, and the heat, dust and bustle of the cities. The Algonquin attracted people from Montreal and from the New England states of the U.S. We believe George Hull was likely from Massachusetts as the Hull family name goes back to the late 1700s in that area. **HISTORY OF THE HOTEL** - The original Algonquin Hotel, with 80 guest rooms, was a wooden building that was completely destroyed by fire in 1914, after which it was replaced by the present-day four-story Tudor Revival structure. From what we have read, one of the main attractions of the original hotel was the saltwater baths. Saltwater was pumped from the Passamaquoddy Bay to the hotel up on the hill overlooking St. Andrews and was held in water tanks in the hotel attic. Guests used bathtubs designed with four taps - two from fresh water and two for saltwater.
