James Hall (1811-1898) was one of the most influential American geologists of the 19th century. For over 50 years, he dominated the fields of stratigraphy and paleontology in the US, amassing one of the largest bibliographies of any American scientist. His monumental 14 volume "Palaeontology of New York" was a taxonomic compilation that attracted international attention to the rich Paleozoic fossil record of New York state. His earlier fallout with Ebenezer Emmons Sr. over the latter's Taconic System, which Emmons dated using a "primordial" trilobite fauna, is legendary. These volumes represent an important contribution to the geology of New York and contain some of the finest paleontological illustrations produced during the 19th century in the U. S.
