The Bab Ballads were written before Gilbert became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. From writing the Bab Ballads Gilbert's 'topsy-turvy' style was developed where the humour was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences, however absurd. Gilber's satirical and cynical approach to humour can also be seen from the Ballads. Sir William Schwenck Gilbert was an English dramatist, librettist, poet and illustrator. He is best known for the fourteen comic operas he produced in collaboration with Sir Arthur Sullivan. CONDITION In a half calf binding.
