Containing works by Annie Edwardes, Charles Badham, Charles Reade, and J. H. Riddell, and edited by George Augustus Sala. Sala, promised his readers that the periodical would be "full of solid yet entertaining matter, that shall be interesting to Englishmen and Englishwomen…and that Filia-familias may read with as much gratification as Pater or Mater-familias", appealing to a solid, literate middle-class. CONDITION In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled boards and gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, a trifle rubbed with wear to extremities. Minor shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine. Front hinge is strained. Internally, firmly bound, pages are bright with the odd spot to endpapers and title page.
