Rebacked/repaired spine with additional end pages added. Includes a variety of black-and-white illustrations throughout. Contains an 1883 marriage certificate and a list of deaths, followed by another removed page. Includes a photo album at back with 6 carte de visites. Some wear and tears to album pages. A wonderful surviving copy of a Catholic family’s religious work, with the marriage certificate listing the owners as the Wolfe family of Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland, with deaths listed in the book until 1947. Also includes a lock of blonde hair and the original publisher’s purchase slip, showing that the book was purchased for $6.00, or approximately $180 today. Written by Mathieu Orsini (1802-1875), of the prominent Orsini family that produced multiple popes, numerous cardinals, and remained loyal to Pope Pius IX as as a “Black noble family” after the unification of Italy and seizure of the Vatican in 1870.
