Description: Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace - 1880 This is a 1st Edition/early printing by Harper & Brothers (as indicated by a lack of date on title page, an 11 word dedication and 16 pp of ads in the back), publisher’s original dark blue cloth lettered in gilt and with lettering and decoration in gold and title on front cover in brown outlined in gold. Condition: Good+ A strongly bound copy with firm hinges and clean gutters. Back top joint starting to split. The boards show rubbing and fading with bumped corners and fraying to spine tips. The lettering and design are colorful and complete. No stamps, stickers or ex libris marks, just some pencil price writing on the endpapers and age-toned page edges. Pages are tight. Lewis Wallace, general of the Union soldiers in the Civil War, governor of the New Mexico Territory, and frequent lecturer, wrote only three works during his busy life. Between his tenure as member of the court and holding office as governor, he published THE FAIR GOD (1873), while preparing to write BEN HUR (1880), which has since been translated into several languages. Overall, a first edition/early printing of a highly important historical fiction novel in Good condition.
