1870s FEMALE NUDE after J-J HENNER: "NAIADE" by ADRIEN NARGEOT (1837-1891)

Description: "NAIADE" *The Naiads were Classical nymphs, minor goddesses, who presided over rivers, streams and lakes; they attended the assemblies of the gods on Mount Olympus according to Classical mythology. An original 1870s engraving by ADRIEN NARGEOT (1837-1891) after the painting by JEAN-JACQUES HENNER in the Musee de Luxembourg. Published as a supplement in the showcase "L'Artiste" periodical, and printed by the Imprimerie Delatre in Montmartre, Paris. All fully inscribed in the caption area. *The central image of the girl is striking, and speaks for itself. Henner's works always have strong tonal contrast, and this one lends itself well to Nargeot's engraving style. Henner is sometimes categorised as a "Naturalist" artist, and some commentators see elements of Pre-Raphaelite influence in his female studies, often set in Classical themes, depicted in profile and with long flowing hair. SIZE of the image area is 13 x 21.5 centimetres, plus caption area, and the entire sheet measures 18.5 x 28 centimetres. CONDITION: Very good.
