It is an outstanding, period photograph, which measures approx. 2 1/4" X 3-1/2" (6 cm. X 9 cm. ) and is mounted on its original Card Mount, which measures approx. 2 1/2 " X 4" (6 cm X 10 cm.) And there is a double-lined, golden border around the photo. This interesting CDV photograph is an albumen print mounted on a heavy cardstock, and it shows a upper-body shot of a juvenile boy in nice, but typical clothing of the time, sporting a suit and fashionable tie. There are no markings on the card to indicate who the subject was. But he has a serious expression, as if he was told by his mother to hold still and not smile. The photographer and artist is shown on the back of the card in gold ink, as a Mr. H. L. Hills, opp [operating out of the] Eagle Hotel, Hamilton, New York. Like many photographers of the time they advertised that they could make duplicates of the photograph to give to all of their friends and relatives. This fascinating "1870's Carte De Visite (CDV)" is in excellent condition. There are some mild surface marks. But there is very little corner or edge wear. The photo is clean and crisp and exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. It is barely faded. The back also is very clean, with no surface flaws. (Please see all photos above.)
