Description: Enjoy this lovely set of 1880-1883 3¢ green Washington stamps, referred to as Bank Notes because they were printed by the prominent monetary bank note companies of the era. On first glance, they may appear to be identical, but like others in the series, it's the grills and secret marks that set them apart. If you're new to collecting Bank Notes, this is the most economical set to start your collection. You'll see that Scott catalog values vary a little less widely in this set, ranging from $35 for the 1870-71 National Bank Note company stamp printed with H Grill to avoid reuse after cancellation (Scott #136) to just $1 for the 1873 Continental Bank Note company stamp printed with a secret mark that's easy to miss—heavier shading under the upper tail of the left ribbon than appears on the other issues (Scott #158). The National Bank Note Company printing without grill and without secret mark currently retails for just $1.80 (Scott #147). There's even more to distinguishing these stamps from Scott #184 and #207, but that's another story! Please let me know if you have any questions! —Joe
