Description: This is an early diary from 1868. Completely filled out every day and fairly easily read. Kept by Frank W. Tuttle. It appears that he lived outside of New Haven, Ct. as he mentions going there quite a bit and also mentions going to Hamden and Wallingford as well as a couple of other towns close by. He states that he had just turned 17 on his last birthday. He attends school and after class, works on his family's farm mowing, planting and selling strawberries, apples, beans, corn, oats, etc. He does some fishing and also traps and skins rats and muscrat. He travels to town to help sell wood that he and his father saws and also sells hay in town. He mentions the names of many locals and friends. He attends church and lodge on a regular basis. He plays baseball and croquet. He does work for neighbors, roofing and lathing homes and repairs fences. He has a sailboat that he takes out and also makes his own beer. He works for a local printer, printing, bronzing, firing the engine, etc. He mentions many local names of companies that he does printing for. The weather is mentioned every day. Nice insight into the everyday life of a post Civil War young man and his family. The family placed a note in the diary that lists family names with birth or death dates, etc. (see photo). The covers show heavy wear, however, are attached. The binding and pages are tight and the pages are in very nice condition with no creases, tears or stains. PLH
