1867- FENIAN UPRISING in KERRY IRELAND; views Cahirciveen & Killorglin Killarney

Description: The Fenian Uprising. Harper's Weekly 1867 This is a single sheet only which is over 150 years old. It was published in the March 30, 1867 issue of Harper's Weekly, Americas leading illustrated paper during the 1800s. It measures 11 x 16 inches in size, and is in excellent and attractive condition (see photos). It presents a pair of wood-engraved views in Ireland. These both measure 6x9 inches in size, and are titled: * THE FENIAN INSURRECTION IN KERRY, IRELAND THE TOWN OF CAHIRCIVEEN. * THE FENIAN INSURRECTION IN KERRY, IRELAND THE TOWN OF KILLORGLIN, NEAR KILLARNEY. The illustrations were accompanied by a related article, with the first half of the piece appearing on this sheet, while the remaining part was printed on a different page in the issue. That page is not included with this item, but I found the text it contained on a Univ. of Michigan website which has photographed many old Harper's Weekly issues, and include its text here. The article in its entirety said: THE FENIAN UPRISING. The second Fenian war in Ireland appears, like the first, to have suddenly come to an untimely end, and all is reported quiet on the Shannon and in Kerry. The anticipated battle in Tipperary did not occur, and the bands who made the various attacks at Cork, Dublin, Drogheda, and Tallaght have disappeared, like the O'DONAGHUE, either into lakes or into the stony bowels of the mountains, where the redcoats cannot find them. The subject of the late efforts, however, retains its interest from the fact that other and more formidable uprisings by the men in the gap are confidently expected by the sympathizers in this country, and full and reliable accounts of the Kerry County and the late uprisings are looked for with great interest. To satisfy in some measure this natural interest we give this week two sketches of Irish localities [continuation of article] made interesting by the late uprising in Kerry County. The town of Cahirciveen, of which one of these illustrations is a view, is situated at the head of the harbor of Valentia, the eastern terminus of the Atlantic Cable. It is a town of about two thousand inhabitants, and a market for some of the best butter in the world. The aspect of this place, backed by the majestic range of the Iveragh Mountains, is rather imposing till one gets into it, when the squalid meanness of the streets, with the bogs and bleak hills beyond the town, produce a contrary impression. We also present a view of Killorglin, near Killarney, at the mouth of the River Larne, which flows through the Lakes of Killarney into Dingle Bay. The deep inlets of the Atlantic in this part of the coast of Ireland afford great facilities for a hostile landing. The mouth of the Larne was a favorite base of operations with the Danes, the nearest representatives, says a spiteful English paper, of the Fenians. They built a fort (the rampart of which is shown in our view on the left of the bridge), and constructed vaults under it to hold stores, so that their countrymen, on landing, might not be destitute of provisions till able to furnish themselves at the expense and with the co-operation of the natives. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
