Elizabeth II formally presented the Constitution to the Government of Canada in Ottawa on April 17, 1982. It was signed by Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Minister of Justice, Jean Chrétien and André Ouellet, the Registrar General. After a substantial agreement on a new amendment formula, the Parliament of Canada requested, in 1981, that the United Kingdom Parliament relinquish its power to amend Canada's Constitution. The Constitution Act, 1982, made several amendments to the British North America Act of 1867, including the renamed the Constitution Act. Following this historic event, the production of the dollar in nickel traveler in 1982 was reduced and matrices of a new design were produced. The reverse shows a representation of Robert Harris' famous painting presenting the Fathers of Confederation gathered at the conference table in Quebec City in 1864. The original painting was destroyed during a fire in 1916, but the artist Red Woods created a copy in 1968 to replace it, including some modifications, including the addition of 3 people.
