1864 NY Governor Reuben Fenton Asks Civil War Colonel Batcheller to be Inspector

Description: In this letter signed on December 15, 1864 newly elected Governor of New York, R. E. Fenton, writes in full: "Colonel: I have the honor to request you to accept the position of Inspector General on my staff. An early reply is desired. R. E. Fenton". Reuben Eaton Fenton (1819-1885) served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate and held two terms as Governor of New York. George S. Batcheller (1837-1908) served in the Civil War, eventually being promoted to Brigadier General. He did in fact accept the position of Inspector General of the Volunteers and National Guard of New York during the last year of the war. After the war he practiced law in Saratoga Springs, NY. During President Grant's administration he served as American Judge of the International Tribunal in Egypt. Accompanying the letter is a period CDV photograph of the dapper Batcheller and his business card as "Mr. Justice Batcheller". Letter is written on a folded piece of ruled paper measuring: 7 3/4" x 5". Condition: Mailing fold lines, scattered soil on all three items, generally good condition.
