Description: The Fearful Issue to be Decided in November Next! Shall the Constitution and The Union Stand or Fall? Fremont, the Sectional Candidate of the Advocates of Dissolution! Buchanan, the Candidate of Those Who Advocate One Country! One Union! One Constitution! and One Destiny!, 1856. 24 pp. 5.5 x 8.25". In good condition. The pamphlet has some writing on the front page. Text block is lightly toned. Few instances of offsetting. Clear of age stains or marks. Binding is string, and is in tact. Please see photos. In interesting campaign pamphlet from the general election of 1856 between the Democrat James Buchanan from Pennsylvania and the Republican John C. Fremont from California. As the pamphlet indicates, the politics of disunion were forefront in the election. Because this is a Democratic pamphlet, it goes to great lengths to paint Republicans–especially abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison, Joshua Giddings, and Nathaniel P. Banks–as radical disunionists who would rather see the country destroyed in the name of abolishing slavery. Buchanan would go on to be elected President only serving one term, losing his party's nomination to Stephen Douglas. COLPAP-0920-RT34
