Description: 1850-1860's $50 Philadelphia, PA- Commonwealth Bank 'Proof 'PMG 65 EPQ- RARE! Click images to enlarge Description  This is a gem so rare it is almost mythical,  an absolutely stunning note 1850- 1860's $50 Philadelphia, PA- Commonwealth Bank. The bank was organized in 1857 and remained in business until 1864 when it was succeeded by the Commonwealth National Bank of Philadelphia. The striking $50 design features Liberty and a Revolutionary war era soldier flanking a round framed detailed map of Pennsylvania flanked by an oval vignette of a young girl shielding her eyes and a vignette of a sailor seated on bales. An orange tint and orange and white L-FIFTY-L  protector complete the design. The note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. There were only 14 example of this variety spread across several lots in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. The note great visual appeal make it very popular with collectors.  The note was graded by PMG GEM UNCIRCULATED 65 EPQ. This is a proof produced from the original plates by American Bank Note.  The original note is excessively rare in any form and thus a proprietary proof may be the only way to acquire an example of the design. The impression is printed on heavy cardstock and is in a lovely condition.   This piece is well margined and has an exceptional paper quality, attractive counters, and a wonderful well preserved Proof.
