It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This is an original press photo. Mrs. Edgar Allen Poe. Baltimore, March 5 -- Valentine from a dying wife-- This poem was written by 22-year-old Virginia Poe to her author husband Edgar Allan Poe a year before she died of tuberculosis. The valentine was presented last week to Enoch Pratt Free Library here, and will go on public display this week for the first time. The verse sheds new light on the couple's poverty-stricken and unhappy existence, and hints at Poe's flirtations with other women. The first letters of each line spell Poe's name. Ever with thee I wish to roam - Dearest my life is thine. Give me a cottage for my home And a rich old cypress vine, Removed from the world with it's sin and care And the tattling of many tongues. Love alone shall guide us when we are there Love shall heal my weakened lungs; And oh, the tranquil hours we'll spend, Never wishing that others may see! Perfect ease we'll enjoy, without thinking to lend Ourselves to the world and its glee- Ever peaceful and blissful we'll be. Saturday February 14, 1846. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
