Robert William Billings (1813 – 14 November 1874) was an English painter and architect. Trained as a topographical draughtsman, he wrote and illustrated many books early in his career, before concentrating on his architectural practice. PROVENANCE: Produced for “The Architectural Antiquities Of The County Of Durham, Ecclesiastical, Castellated, And Domestic ”, published by George Andrews in 1846. TYPE: Antique steel engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is a nothing on the reverse side which is blank. CONDITION: Good, suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Ryton is a semi-rural small town near the western border of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England, being 5.8 miles (9.3 km) west of Newcastle upon Tyne. Historically in County Durham, it was once an independent town but it became incorporated into the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear and the Borough of Gateshead in 1974. Holy Cross Church, Ryton is a Church of England parish church in Ryton, Tyne and Wear. The church is a Grade I listed building. The Holy Cross church is the oldest building in Ryton and dates back to 1220. The most striking feature of the church is its 13th-century broach spire which is 36 m tall.
