Description: The Liberty Bell. By Friends of Freedom, Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Fair, Boston, 1842, 204 pp, hardcover, 6.75 x 4.5”, 12mo. In fair condition. Front board is detached. Creasing along edges with staining and soiling overall. Spine is chipped along extremes with top extreme mostly missing. Spine skewed. “S.H. Gay” in old hand on front flyleaf. “Found amidst piles of cast stuff left by family in upper floor of Allan Gay House (262 South Street) barn in 1958. New owner let me take what I wanted before he burned everything in the yard. This book belonged to Sidney Howard Gay, a prominent abolitionist who grew up in this house. John P. Richardson 13 Henry Street, Hingham” on front paste down. John P. Richardson, a resident of Hingham for over 60 years was a well-known wetland specialist, environmentalist and historian (his obituary from 2011). Interior typically toned with light foxing. A few notations in John’s hand throughout. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. The Liberty Bell, by Friends of Freedom was an annual abolitionist gift book, edited and published by Maria Weston Chapman, to be sold or gifted to participants in the National Anti-Slavery Bazaar organized by the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society. Named after the symbol of the American Revolution, it was published nearly every year from 1839 to 1858. Scarce in this volume. Sydney Howard Gay (1814-1888) was an American attorney, journalist and abolitionist who was active in New York City. Beginning in 1843, he was editor of the National Anti-Slavery Standard for 14 years. His offices became a stop of the Underground Railroad, and he became very active in collaborating with other to help fugitive slaves reach freedom. Gay and Louis Napoleon, a free black, aided in helping an estimated 3,000 refugees to get from upstate New York to Canada. He traveled on a One Hundred Convention tour with Frederick Douglass.
