It’s now one of my eBay listings. ...“Between 1795 and 1850, iron and steel, the typical materials of the Napoleonic Wars and the Industrial Revolution, were widely used for jewellery.” ...“Berlin iron has very little written history. The peak of jewellery production at Berlin, seems to have been at the time of the War of Liberation against Napoleon in 1813-1815, when appeals were made to the wealthy to surrender their jewels for the national cause. In exchange for gold and diamonds, it seems that they were issued with iron jewellery as a form of receipt.” ...“Although iron jewellery had become popular largely because of the difficult time of war with France, it did not by any means disappear, when peace was restored. In fact it is clear that iron jewellery, had advantages, which made it valued as jewellery for their own sake and not merely as substitutes for rarer materials.” ...“In iron jewellery the date is always difficult to determine particularly when mesh work is involved.” ...“If one quality of jewellery is to give distinction and exclusive charm to the wearer, Berlin iron will do it better than most.” ...“Fine wire work bracelets are in the New Berlin Museum collection.” ...“It is easy to see, that when for various reasons precious materials cannot be obtained or it is not proper or safe to wear them, fine workmanship and good design may be used with materials, that are so common as to be nearly valueless.” ...“Berlin iron jewellery did not set out to imitate precious materials, but quite the opposite. Naturally, the ornaments that were designed to take their place did not try to look like them, but rather as unlike as possible, in order to emphasize the fact that the wearer had been patriotic and sacrificed her gold for the Fatherland. It remained popular until about the 1850s and was manufactured in France as well as in Germany. They added distinctive grace to the wearer.” ...“The finest examples were very costly in their day.” ...“Berlin iron is a good deal harder to find.
