The first portion includes those issues struck from 1840 through 1852 as well as pieces dated 1856 and 1857. (Proofs dated 1853, 1854 and 1855 belong to distinct types and, as such, are not included under the No Motto heading.) The second portion is comprised of those deliveries dated 1858-1865. No Motto Seated Halves delivered from 1840 through 1857 have unknown, although presumably very limited original mintages. The vast majority of these coins were struck as part of the "master" sets that the Mint prepared for presentation or other official purposes. Only a handful of these sets seem to have been distributed, most of which have long been broken up and the coins dispersed individually. Many of the individual specimens have since found their way into museum collections such as those at the Smithsonian Institution and American Numismatic Society (ANS), thereby further reducing the already limited number of pieces available to private collectors. We believe that the Mint also struck a few additional proof coins in many years during the 1840s and 1850s for individual sale, often after receiving specific orders from contemporary collectors. The Dollar's status as the nation's largest silver coin has made it a perennial favorite among numismatists, and this denomination is the most plentiful among extant proofs dated 1840-1857. The Half Dollar, on the other hand, appears to be the rarest of the proof silver types from this era. Apparently, few contemporary collectors ordered individual specimens, and extant populations for most issues are in the range of just 4-10 pieces. There are perhaps as many as 15 survivors of the 1847 delivery, the 1856 and 1857 exist to the extent of approximately 25 coins and the 1851 Half is currently unknown in proof format. Survivors of each of these proof deliveries appear in the market only once in a very long while. In fact, for every proof Seated Half dated 1840-1857 that this writer has handled over the past decade, he has described at least five proof Seated Dollars from the same era. Beginning in 1858, the Mint made a concerted effort to market proof coins to the wider collecting public. Accordingly, yearly mintage figures increased dramatically over pre-1858 levels, and they were also recorded in federal records for the first time in 1859. There were not all that many numismatists active in the United States during the late 1850s and early 1860s, however, and many specimens were melted as unsold at the end of the year. While proof Halves dated 1858-1865 are much more plentiful than their earlier-dated counterparts in the Seated Liberty series, these issues are much rarer than their original mintages might imply. There is at least one branch mint proof in the No Motto Seated Half Dollar series, an 1852-O that is listed in the November 2006 NGC Census as a Proof-62. Two other proof '52-O Halves are rumored to exist, and Walter Breen attributed the 1851-O that appeared as lot 586 in the 1975 ANA Sale as a proof. The latter coin was cataloged as "Prooflike MS-60," and its status as a proof has not been verified.Store CategoriesStores HomeColonialsHalf CentsLarge CentsSmall CentsTwo-Cent PiecesThree-Cent SilversNickelsHalf DimesDimesTwenty-Cent PiecesQuarter DollarsHalf DollarsSeated DollarsTrade DollarsMorgan DollarsPeace DollarsOne Dollar GoldTwo Fifty GoldThree Dollar GoldFive Dollar GoldTen Dollar GoldTwenty Dollar GoldCommemorative GoldThree-Cent NickelsOther
