This work gives the history of this branch of the Presbyterian Church in America, the relations between it and the Reformed Presbyterians, biographies of eleven of her early ministers, about 15 sermons, as well as important historical notices and accounts James Patterson Miller (1792-1854), native of Pennsylvania, Associate (Presbyterian) minister. He was for twenty-one years the pastor at Argyle, New York. He served as a missionary in the Territory of Oregon in the 1850’s. “It was an evidence of his great benevolence as well as strength of character, that he should, at so advanced an age, have formed and carried into effect the purpose of migrating to a distant region in the character of a missionary.” – Thomas Hanna. Rev. Miller was killed by the explosion of the steam boiler on the boat he was traveling in from Portland to his home at the mouth of the Columbia river.
