SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 18.5 x 13 cm (7.25 x 5.25 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and etched by J.J. Dodd. Joseph Josiah Dodd was born in 1810 in Liverpool. His family later moved to Tonbridge, Kent. During the 1830s he gained a reputation as a topographical artist and engraver. In 1835, Queen Victoria was presented with a volume of Dodd’s watercolours of Tonbridge when she visited the town. Dodd was exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists at this time. He lived for a year in Paris from 1838, after which he spent his remaining years in Lancashire and Wales. He taught drawing, geometry, perspective and architectural drawing at the Manchester School of Design in the 1840s, before moving his family to Bangor in about 1859. He spent his final years in Oldham, Lancashire, where he died aged 86. PROVENANCE: Published as an illustration to Sheffield Grace's "Memoirs of the Family of Grace". Privately printed in 1823. TYPE: Antique copper plate etching printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In 1296, the house was owned by Walter atte Knoll, a member of the jury which assessed the parish for Edward I's taxes. The house was sold in 1803 to Major General Alexander Beaton, who wrote about and practised new methods of agriculture at Knowle. He was the Governor of St. Helena from 1808 to 1813. The antiquarian, Sheffield Grace owned Knowle House in the mid-19th-century. The gardens were further developed in the 1930s by Colonel and Mrs Benskin, who also added a new wing to the house.
