The first three volumes of the four volume collected theological lectures of Reverend John Dick, published the year after his death under the guidance of his son, Andrew Coventry Dick. In 1801 Dick became minister of the prominent Greyfriars congregation in Glasgow, and gained influence following a publication in which he argued for the doctrine of plenary inspiration, a theology identifying all parts of the Bible as divinely authoritative. This edition belonged to the grandson of John Dick, with a charming illustration to the verso of a front endpaper of volume I explaining: 'This copy of his revered Grandfather's lectures is presented to Alexander Crum by his affectionate father, October 9th 1847'. The father in question is John Dick's daughter's husband, Scottish Liberal politician Humphrey Ewing Crum-Ewing.The binder's stamp of 'MacLehose, Glasgow' features to the recto of the front free endpaper of each volume. James MacLehose was a well known publisher and bookseller who opened a fine bindery in Glasgow in 1862. CONDITION In a signed full calf binding. Externally very smart, with only very minor patches of rubbing to the spine label of volume II. Each volume features the binders stamp to the recto of the front free endpaper. Contemporary owner's inscription to verso of a front endpaper of volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Offsetting to title page of volume I, pages otherwise clean and bright.
