Description: Scarce 1831 JM 8 reales. This is a key date of the series. In 1831 Lima Mint senior assayer Juan Roxas retired and was replaced by Manuel Carassa, the junior assayer. The junior assayer position was filled by Manuel Velarde who left the Cuzco Mint. So, in 1831 there are coins bearing both JM and MM. Coins bearing the JM initials are much scarcer than coins bearing the MM initials. High grade examples of this coin are especially elusive, with just 3 examples at NGC graded AU or higher, as opposed to 20 examples of the MM variation in AU or higher. Book passage is from Coins of Independent Peru, vol 1, Horace Flatt.
