Description: This listing is for one of the earliest bound printings of "A Visit From St. Nicholas," dated 1830, 1st edition (7 years after the poem was written). The book is a comprehensive history of Philadelphia, written as part of the formation of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It relies heavily on the oral histories from the city's older residents. It includes Moore's poem, which was still obscure at the time, with unknown authorship. Here, the poem is called "Christmas Times" and is noted for being told strictly from the narrator's point of view with no reference to the rest of the household. Though a bit jarring to read at first, it is equally charming in its conciseness. The book's editor praises the poem, so it appears he did not make the changes himself, but acquired the work in this form, most likely during one of his interviews. The concept of "Santa Claus" was still new to many Americans at this time, and he provides an introduction explaining the relationship of St. Nicholas to "Belch Nickel" of German tradition and "St. Claes" of the Dutch. The inclusion of this poem in a book on Philadelphia is the earliest indication that the Santa Claus we know today has his roots in the New York/Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. In fact, Moore's inspiration for St. Nicholas is widely thought to be his friend Washington Irving's portrayal of St. Nicholas in the Dutch-centric, "Knickerbocker's History of New York," written in 1809. In any event, this 1830 printing is a great piece of Christmas history for the advanced collector or scholar. The book measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches and has 740 pages of text and illustrations. Construction is hardcover, black leather with gilt titles and spine bands. At 191 years old, it is in excellent condition overall. The covers were handsomely rebacked at some point and show minimal wear. Pages have light foxing, otherwise surprisingly clean. Binding is tight. "A Visit From St. Nicholas" appears on pages 242-43. A remarkable old book, both rare and important. On consignment from a lifelong Christmas collector. Thanks for looking! Thanks for looking!
