Written by the former personal secretary to the Marquis de Lafayette who accompanied the Revolutionary War hero on his last triumphant trip to the United States in 1824-1825. Levasseur subsequently wrote a now-classic account of the trip, Lafayette en Amerique.... It first appeared in France earlier that year and was translated into English as LAFAYETTE IN AMERICA IN 1824 AND 1825, OR JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO THE UNITED STATES. Thisletter, written a few weeks after the newly published American edition appeared in New York bookstores, probably refers to Levasseur's proceeds from the American edition.His New York correspondent, Baron Peugnet, was a famous French-American exile, a former Bonapartist hero, personally decorated with highest military honors by Emperor Napoleon. After the Bourbon Restoration, Peugnet was a leader of a failed revolutionary conspiracy in which his dear friend Lafayette was implicated. Condemned to death, he and his brother escaped to America, settling in New York, where they bought land in Greenwich Village and opened the most fashionable boys’ boarding school in the city (their privileged students including the future General Beauregard). Peugnet had of course been present at the New York City dinner where the Marquis had been before is departure (with Levasseur in tow). The original French edition of Levasseur's book is rare, priced up to $1750 by American book-dealers. But Levasser's autograph letters, especially on the subject of his writings, are even more so.
