SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 23.5 x 17.5 cm , 9.25 x 6.75 inches (medium) plus margins with a blank back. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Joseph Farington R.A and engraved by Letitia Byrne (1779–1849). Joseph Farington RA (21 November 1747 – 30 December 1821) was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist. Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Farington was the second of seven sons of William Farington and Esther Gilbody. After his early education in Manchester, Farington went to study with Richard Wilson in London in 1763. In 1764, 1765, and 1766 he won "premiums" from the Society of Artists for his landscape drawing; he became a member in 1765. He joined the Royal Academy when it was founded in 1769 and was elected an ARA in 1783 and an RA in 1785. PROVENANCE: Published in "Magna Britannia, being a concise topographical account of the several counties of Great Britain". This was an ambitious topographical and historical survey published by the antiquarians Daniel Lysons and his brother Samuel Lysons in several volumes between 1806 and 1822, published by Caddell & Davies in London. It covers the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumberland, Derbyshire, and Devon. The work was curtailed in 1819 on Samuel Lysons' death with the final volume being of Devon, published in 1822. This view is taken from this final work. TYPE: Antique etching printed on paper.
