Description: An interesting medal from the losing candidate for a seat in the English Parliament by-election in 1816. The candidate, Thomas Leyland(1752-1827), won a lottery in the 1770's and set himself up in the slave trade. He became a banker after the British slave trade was abolished in 1807. Leyland was 3 times elected mayor of Liverpool, but lost both time he ran for Parliament. When he died, he left an estate, the largest in England up to that date, of 600,000 pounds, equivalent to roughly $75,000,000 today. This medal, sterling silver, is about 37mm. Leyland would know his electors as this election took place before the British Reforms of the 1830's. To be eligible to vote it was necessary to be a man and have property of over 50 pounds.
