Wood, D.D. Hardcover in elaborately tooled leather with plentiful gilt decoration. About the Rev. Dr. Challoner (September 29, 1691 – January 12, 1781): Richard Challoner was Bishop of Debra, Vicar Apostolic of the London District he is the author of spiritual and controversial works. Some History of Rev. Dr. Challoner's Biblical Revisionary works: The first edition of Rev. Dr. Challoner's revision was published in 1749, that which consisted of the New Testament only and professed to be the newly revised and corrected Clementine edition of the Scriptures (the standard Vulgate). Followed the next year in 1750 with a published edition of the whole Bible. In 1752 he published a third edition of the New Testament followed in 1763 with a second edition of both Testaments including a fourth edition of the New Testament. Life as a Bishop During Times of Religious Persecution: As a Bishop, Challoner resided in London, though on occasion, as during the Gordon Riots ("No Popery" Riots) of 1780, he was "obliged" to retire into the countryside. The Rev. Dr. Challoner's extensive activity is most remarkable during these times of Religious persecution when his time was spent in hiding. Forced often into abruptly moving to escape the Protestant informers eager to earn the government reward of £100 for the conviction of a priest during these tumultuous religious times. Challoner was once indicted by John Payne, being well known as the "Protestant Carpenter", though Payne was compelled to drop the proceedings when documents he had forged had fallen into the hands of the bishop's lawyers...similar to what we are witnessing today in the U.S.A. as in the case of President Donald J. Trump, and others' standing up for our God Given Rights, Religious Freedoms, and our Constitutional rights. The Unfortunate Gordon Riots and the Demise of Challoner: The Rev. Dr. Challoner and the London Catholic priests would be continually harassed until finally the harassment was remedied by the "Catholic Relief Act of 1778" according to which priests were no longer liable to imprisonment for life. This concession speedily aroused religious dispute, leading to the Gordon Riots in 1780 with rioters attacking any London building that was associated with Catholicism or owned by Catholics. Challoner at nearly 90-years of age, from within his refuge in hiding could hear the mob, who were searching for him with the intention of dragging him through the streets. Upon their failed attempt to find his refuge, he escaped to Finchley, where he remained until the London riots came to an end. However, just 6-months after the rights ended Challoner died at the age of 89. Who was Ignatius Frederick Horstmann (December 16, 1840 – May 13, 1908): Ignatius Frederick Horstmann was an American Prelate of the Roman Catholic Church served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland in Ohio commencing in 1892 until his death in 1908. He was described in the most comprehensive resource on Catholic history, teaching and information gathered in all of human history (the "Catholic Encyclopedia") as "a zealous pastor of souls, a wise and prudent ruler, a fearless defender of truth." Who was James Frederick Bryan Wood (April 27, 1813 – June 20, 1883): James Frederick Bryan Wood an American Prelate of the Roman Catholic Church served as the fifth Bishop and the first Archbishop of Philadelphia commencing in 1860 until his death in 1883.
