Description: 17th Century Original Dutch Landscape Etching by ANTHONIE WATERLOO (1609-1690) A large oak tree on a mound at the side of a country road, with two travellers in conversation nearby, at bottom right. In the centre middle distance there are two more small figures. One of a series of 6 numbered landscapes, designated as H. 65-70. This one, being Plate 2, is designated as Hollstein 66. Second state The British Museum chooses a wide date range for it - 1640 to 1690. Signed with initials in the plate, top left corner A W f. Plate number "2" at top right corner. CONDITION: Good impression, evenly inked, with excellent tonal contrast and exquisite detail as we expect from Anthonie Waterloo's compositions. NOTE: a very small piece missing at top left corner caused by laying down, but minor. Signs of stains showing at top corners caused by old paste/glue. Trimmed to on/about the platemark line, but well clear of the actual image area. Printed on "laid" paper, nicely age-toned, and with a papermaker's watermark/filigrane, tipped in at top corners to a support sheet of card. Signs that the print was once mounted in an album, traces of old glue/paste at all corners from reverse. See my photo of part of the print on the lightbox to see the laid paper. Please use the zoom facility. DIMENSIONS: 131 x 145 millimetres REFERENCES: British Museum: F,3.51, and another impression at Sheepshanks.1658. F.W.H.Hollstein "Dutch and Flemish..." 66 (ii) Adam Bartsch, "Le Peintre-Graveur" II,72.66 PROVENANCE: On the support sheet we have a previous collector's pencil notes and a an old inscription to a Craddock & Barnard catalogue 1970s. I have no reason to doubt this. Makes sense. Readers of a certain vintage will have fond memories of Craddock & Barnard catalogues and their shop in Museum Street, London - a Mecca and an Aladdin's Cave for Old Master print collectors in the pre-internet age, a friendly place and sorely missed. They sold over 600 items to the British Museum, just across the street.
