Description: 17th Century Original Dutch Landscape Etching by ANTHONIE WATERLOO (1609-1690) Two boys and their dog by the waterside. The small figures are on the left in the bottom corner, beside a brook, set in a woodland landscape with a path and a clearing. Two tall trees on the right. One of a series of six numbered landscapes, designated as H. 33-38. This one is numbered 4 and is designated as Hollstein 36. The British Museum chooses a wide date range for it - 1640 to 1690; in fact most museums seem to incline towards the later date. Signed with initials in the plate, and the number 4, in the top left corner. CONDITION/TECHNICAL: The structure of the item is this: printed on thin laid paper, which has then been laid down on a support sheet of card, which shows signs at the corners of having been attached to an album at some time. This is then attached at the back of the top edge by a strip of brown paper tape to a further support sheet of what looks like early 20th century paper. PRINT QUALITY: A good impression, evenly inked, sharp, with excellent tonal contrast and exquisite detail as we expect from Anthonie Waterloo's compositions. Good tonal contrast, so that the variations of light and shade are captured perfectly, as in the clearing to the right of the composition. Trimmed to thread margins on/about the platemark line, but well clear of the actual image area. (Because of the thick support sheet, I cannot show anything useful on the lightbox).
