Description: This European pen and ink with gray wash on laid paper old master study for a cartouche depicts the baby Moses being dicovered on the banks of the Nile by the Egyptian princess. Most likely Italian, it dates from the middle to late 1600's and measures 22" x 17 1/2" framed; 10 1/8" x 7 1/2" actual drawing and 15 1/4" x 10 1/4" (sheet size). Masterfully executed with nice anatomy, sophisticated foreshortening, pleasing shading and fine composition, it is likely final preparatory drawing and bears the earmarks of an Italian master well-trained in the baroque tradition. The paper shows irregularities on the edges as well as tack holes, wrinkles and scattered, notable foxing. The images are strong with good contrast and expected ink-fading for drawings of this age. It is housed in an early 20th c. gold leaf and black painted wooden frame with obvious edge wear. The work has been remounted behind UV filter plex with acid free materials and display beautifully.
