Description: 1797 Large Cent, Gripped Edge, Reverse of 1795, looks to be VG-details as there are two chop mark-style cuts in the reverse, which was common to do in that early American Constitutional era. The reverse variety is easier to understand, as still-good dies of the 1795 reverse were used in minting 1797 cents even as the new 1797 reverse was introduced in some of the later year's minting runs. Why "grip" the edge? It's easy to answer: no one knows for sure! The reasoning was likely not to improve the handling of the coin. It could even be that the copper planchets arrived in Philadelphia with the grip marks already there. Such are the mysteries of these early U.S. years - in the Adams Administration, or even the final weeks of the Washington presidency! Shipped with signature tracking for your added assurance.
