It is being sold as a single sheet, not mounted, matted, nor framed.Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752-1804), was a French Zoologist who contributed to the cataloging of over 400 species of Fish and the identification of 25 new species in the Tableau Encyclopedique, which also included zoological sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, snakes, amphibians and insects. He was a priest at Rouergue, France where he served as a professor of Natural History at a local college while also being commissioned by Panckoucke to produce these remarkable animal illustrations.Jacques Renaud Benard, was the engraver of all the fish plates for Bonnaterre prints for the Tableau Encyclopedique. "Benard Direxit" can be found in the bottom margin indicating that the plates were directed by him in his atelier or workshop, which had become very successful by this time. Benard's plate engraving skills are at their best with very delicate line work, yet yielding a strong impession.Size: The image area measures 6 1/4 by 9 inches (16x23cm) on a 9x12" page (23x32cm) Condition: The print is in Good condition for its age, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy cotton page with deckled edges as originally issued. The paper is very strong and heavy, not brittle in the least. There is some browning, a hint of a dampstain in the bottom right corner and wear around the edges. Overall a strong impressions and a stressed antique appearance that is desireable. See the pics for more on condition.
