This Georgian vinaigrette has the Maker's Mark for John Shaw, one of the most famous silversmith of his time. The piece is small size and its exterior is undecorated. The top of the vinaigrette is monogrammed with three initials in interwoven calligraphy. The exterior is smooth, clear, and undecorated. The piece has a hinged lid with the front of the lid having a slightly extended edge to assist with opening it. The inside of the vinaigrette is gold washed and has a hinged grill under which the sponge with the smelling salts would go. The grill is also gold washed and has a beautiful and delicate floral and foliate engraved design over the perforated grill. Just a great and wonderful antique that very seldom comes by. It is in great condition after being around for 240 years. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: 1781-1782. Origin: Birmingham England, in the United Kingdom. Size: Measures ~1 1/2" by ~1" and is 3/8" high. The piece weighs about 19.5 grams. Maker: John Shaw. Marks: Marked with a Lion Passant (for sterling) IS within a rectangular (for John Shaw) and the Queens head facing right (indicating taxes were paid) on the inside of the lid. Also marked with an Anchor (Birmingham mark), IS and the date letter I within a vertical rectangle with pointed bottom (1781-1782). Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful rare antique made by one of the most famous silversmith of Birmingham England, which would make a great addition to any collection. Condition: The vinaigrette is in very good condition with no breaks, or repairs. The inside has minimum wear, if any, commensurate with the piece's age and utilitarian function. The exterior has some scratches and a few minor dings which are difficult to see and do not distract from the quality or beauty of the piece. The top of the lid is monogrammed. The piece could probably use a good cleaning, which we leave to the new owner. Be that as it may this is a great antique which very seldom comes by in such a good shape.
