Description: Originally published in 1733, Bolingbroke’s aim was to encourage cooperation between the Whig party and the Tories to renew constitutional safeguards being weakened by the corruption within the British government. Notable for its sustained attacks on the policies of Robert Walpole (with a 55 page ‘dedication’), it had less affect on England’s policies than it did the American policies being read by the likes of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. This particular volume is an ex-library copy from Loyola College, having been de-accessioned in 1958 and has several blue library stamps as well as other library marks particularly on the title page. The front board is off and the back board held on but loosely; there is foxing and paper discoloration throughout. The inside of the boards is discolored from the leather turndown and has various writings inside. The Frontispiece is intact with foxing (see photo). Acceptable Condition: 8vo: full leather with front board off, back board loose; scuffing and rubs to both, corners bent and rounded: ridged and banded spine with crack up the center, library markings, loss of material and loss of head and tail: leather has shrunk away from the edges at spine: intact frontispiece: writing inside in both pencil and early ink: writing on title page including library marks and name (C M Earle?): “A Dissertation upon Parties in Several Letters to Caleb D’Anvers, Esq; Dedicated to the Right Honorable Sir Robert Walpole”: eighth edition: Sir Henry St. John Bolingbroke: London: printed for R.
