Description: Scott 159-E var, 6c Continental Bank Note Co., with secret mark, 1873. Single with experimental grill essay measuring 12x17 points (9 x 13.5 mm), original gum, hinged (remnant). 2020 Crowe certificate mentions that the “…top horizontal row of points in the grill break the paper of the stamp,” as is probably the case on any other known example, but it is otherwise sound (I would have called a few short perfs at left, but Bill didn’t.)An exceptional rarity, worthy of further study. There are known experimental essay grills on the Nationals (e.g. ex-Earl of Crawford) that measure 11x14 points (a 6c denomination sold for $3,220 in 2007), but this is the first of this size and the first I’ve seen on a Continental printing (the issued “J” grill, which catalogs $1,800, measures 10x12 points, much smaller than this grill). I believe this probably originated from Charles Steele, just as the ex-Earl of Crawford essays are believed to have originated.2024 Scott Specialized catalog value: N/A Estimated cash value: $2,500-$3,000 = = = = Buy with confidence!
