Synonyms: Quercus californica, Quercus sonomensis, Quercus tinctoria californica It is sometimes known simply as black oak or Kellogg oak. This is in the red oak family and is native to western North America. It is closely related to black oaks in other parts of North America. A medium sized broad-leaved deciduous tree (40 to 80 feet tall and 1 to 2 1/2 feet in diameter) with an open, rounded top. At high elevations, it may occur as a large shrub .Fruit: Acorn, 1 to 2 1/2 inches long, reddish brown; cap is deep, covering about half the nut. Require 2 seasons to mature. Minimum USDA Hardiness Zone 5-10 Medicinal use : Any galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of hemorrhages, chronic diarrhea, dysentery etc Edible parts : Seed - cooked.Used as a staple food by several native North American Indian tribes. A bitter taste. The seed is 25 - 30mm long and 18mm wide, it can be dried, ground into a powder and used as a thickening in stews etc or mixed with cereals for making bread. The roasted seed is a coffee substitute. Other uses of : Wood - coarse-grained, heavy, hard, strong, very brittle, not very durable. It is of little economic importance, but is occasionally used for fence posts and as a fuel.
