Description: Roland Poska was born in Scotland in 1938 and immigrated to Rockford, IL when he was ten years old. He received degrees from Rockford College and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he was introduced to the mechanics of paper making. He taught at Rockford College, Cranbrook, and the Layton School of Art, later co-founding the Milwaukee School of Art and Design. He taught there while simultaneously running a lithography print studio, Fishy Wale Press. He is known for his paintings made with colorful paper pulp, often very large in scale and abstract in composition. Over his five-decade career, he explored themes of color, nature and egalitarianism on a monumental scale.Poska was a nationally known artist by 1984, the year he received a commission for a 270 foot long painting for a federal building in Milwaukee. His work was the subject of over thirty solo exhibitions in his lifetime, including at the Rockford Art Museum, Rockford IL; Midwest Museum of Art, Elkhart, IN; and The Neville Public Museum, Green Bay, WI. His works are included in the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Milwaukee Art Museum. This suite of 10 unique colorful lithographs is from a group he produced that explored landscape verdant imagery, each in this group being titled Summer Series, different dates, signed and numbered in pencil 1/125, but a group of 125 "unique" prints due to the hand application of his favored pulp hand-made paper on each separate one. This raised hand applied textured paper creates a 3D image, the pulp adhered tightly to the print paper beneath. The image of each measures approx 12 1/2" x 7 1/2" on paper measuring approx 14 1/2" x 10 1/2". NOTE: In the 3rd image you see two separate prints which are printed on the single piece of paper, still joined in the center. It appears Poska thought these could be framed as a diptych, or separated if one wanted. You also see included in the sale a purposely made box designed by Poska to hold such prints. The box has some scratches/spotting, so see the photos. (The title, "Deckle", refers to the torn uneven edge of the paper.)
